Filter for box turtle pool?
I have an adult eastern box turtle (female) and Ive been thinking about putting in a raised pool/water dish for him to soak in (it will be siliconed in about halfway up the tank with a plastic ramp--also siliconed--leading up to it. I'll put repti carpet on the ramp so she can get a grip). I will need a filter (not a large one, it'll probably be about a gallon of water), but it will have to be able to be submerged in shallow water, handle lots of dirt, and hopefully run for short periods of time without water (she likes to splash water out of the dish). Any ideas?
Your best bet is getting an external one, because theirs not going to be much water in your pool, im not sure the big internal filters will fit and the smaller internal ones arent really equipped to handle the mess turtles make, ive had lots of different make sand sizes of filters.
I have a 250 gallon tank at the moment, for my 9 inch slider and we use a fluval 405 external, the 105 model would be more than enough for you and is worth the investment (prob about 50 dollars online) Their easy as cake to clean and your not fussing with drippy water all over your room.
If that seems too complex for the little amount of water you have, id stay with fluval and get a small internal model like fluval 2plus internal, the 1plus MAY look good to you, but you will end up cleaning it out every other day when it gets clogged (and it will).. even with the 2 plus you will need to clean the actual filter every week.
This is my local supplier but your prob in the states, you can use it as a reference anywho,
Good luck
