Infiniti Announces New JX Luxury Crossover
Just before the start of the New York Auto Show in April, Infiniti announced that it will release a three-row luxury crossover vehicle, set to go on sale in spring 2012 as a 2013 model. Infiniti has not released much information on the new JX crossover yet, but they have released a blurry sketch of the exterior which suggests that it will stick with the signature styling cues of the luxury brand.
The JX crossover appears to feature dynamic and elegant line treatments that are inspired by nature. It has styling thought to be influenced by the Infiniti Essence concept car that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2009. More details on the Infiniti JX concept will be revealed at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August. Then in November of this year, the production version will make its global debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
Carlos Tavares, chairman, Nissan Americas, explained, "The all-new Infiniti JX crossover will allow us to continue to expand the Infiniti brand's presence in the Americas. In 2010, Infiniti was one of the fastest growing luxury brands in the United States, and this year we will expand our presence further to Mexico and Panama, followed by Chile in the first half of 2012." Ben Poore, vice president of Infiniti Americas, added, "There aren't a lot of choices for luxury families today. The all-new Infiniti JX is the 7-passenger antidote to the ho-hum luxury crossovers that are out there right now. The Infiniti JX will have a stunning interior, while offering exceptional seating, flexibility, easy access to the roomy third row, plus the latest in-vehicle technology – including next-generation telematics. A fitting addition to our line, it will challenge the status quo in its class."
Infiniti has kept the details of the new JX luxury crossover very quiet, but it is known that the crossover will have three-row seating for seven and will be more than just the J30 reborn. Infiniti has also trademarked the names JX20, JX25, JX25h, and JX30. Auto insiders believe that this means that there could be several engines available on the new crossover. On the other hand, Infiniti could just be making sure that they can get the name they want when they decide on a powertrain.
The interior of the compact SUV will have a centrally mounted display with air vents on the sides. The gear shift lever is similar to what you would find in other Infiniti's, with the same knob in the center console between the heated seat controls. Infiniti has not made any comment about the engine, but the new JX crossover will most likely receive Nissan's 3.5-liter VQ V6, which can produce 290 horsepower.
The Infiniti JX will have almost nothing in common with Infiniti's eight-passenger QX56. The crossover will target other luxury crossovers such as the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz M-Class. The Infiniti JX is expected to deliver a stunning interior, extremely smooth ride and all the conveniences of a small SUV.
