(a)What is the work done by gravity on the elevator before it hits the spring?
An elevator cable breaks when a 755kg elevator is 22.5 m above the top of a huge spring(k=8x10^4N/m) at the bottom of the shaft.
(b)Calculate the speed of the elevator just before striking the spring
(c)Calculate the amount the spring compresses
W = ΔPE
W = mg(22.5 - 0)
W = 755 * 9.8 * 22.5
W = 166477.5 J
So that's the work done by gravity before it contacts the spring. All of that energy there is converted into spring PE. Therefore do this:
U = 1/2kx^2
W = U
166477.5 J = 1/2(8x10^4)x^2
332955 = 8x10^4 * x^2
4.162 = x^2
x = 2.04 m compression
Oh, and to find the speed of the elevator before contact with the spring, just do total E = PE = mgh where h = 22.5
Now all of that E is equal to KE
1/2mv^2 = mgh
1/2(755)v^2 = 755 * 9.8 * 22.5
.5v^2 = 9.8 * 22.5
v^2 = 441
v = 21 m/s
