anyone use saltwater for pool water the pro/con's?
The con is the initial price of the unit. They are expensive.
The Pro's: That initial cost can usually be paid for in savings, over traditional sanitizing methods in about 3 years, for an average pool, in an average season. The pool water is easier on everyone's skin and eyes.People who traditionally, couldn't swim in a normally chlorinated pool, now can, with no effect. The cost of salt to maintain the salinity is minimal. It's just plain old tablesalt. Once salted, it averages out to maybe 40 dollars per season. The units are electrically effecient, they don't require much power at all. The units manufactured in the last 5 years are reliable and require very little maintenance and don't impact your water chemistry, like traditional sanitizing methods do that then require you to spend more money to balance the water.
I'd like to point out to the other person who answered about it "corroding" your pump. This is untrue. Salt water pool's salinity is between 2500 ppm and 3500 ppm, 1/300th that of a human tear.You won't even taste it. The water doesn't come in contact with the motor of a pump in any event, just the plastic volute and impellor housing. Salt has no effect on plastic or bronze in this application.
Let'sput it this way, I've installed hundereds of them and NEVER been asked to remove one. Over 40% of new pools in north america are now using them. Ask your friends, they'll be able to give you an impartial opinion. I'm out of the biz now, so have no vested interest in trying to push them, the above is all based on my experience as a technician in the field and not behind the counter of a pool store.
Edit: KO's answer stating that you'll float higher is false. It's not saline enough for you to notice any different bouyancy.
