Pink Eye,Symptoms and its Types
It is still not unheard of to occasionally see a major outbreak spread rapidly through a school. Pink eye can cause any parent concern when they see their child come home from school with a pink to extremely red eye. Hemorrhagic forms of pinkeye cause small amounts of blood to spread out over the white part of the eye and the appearance exceeds their actual capacity to damage eyesight. The first scare is eye damage. Thankfully, pink eye rarely causes any long-term eye vision damage and some types of pink eye can resolve without any treatment in a week or so.
A number of years ago an outbreak of pink eye in a elementary school had all the moms frantic and half of the school would be missing in action shortly after the announcement was sent home. Those days were prior to the education parents and health care providers have been receiving in current times about preventive measures to help in ceasing the spread of pink eye. In the past if one child was infected by pinkeye it was not long before half the class ended up with it too. Now that personal hygiene is taught more extensively in the schools at an earlier age parents are becoming more aware of how to prevent further infection of pink eye at home. This has helped seclude outbreaks so they occur less frequently than previously.
In fact, those bacteria that also cause sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia and gonorrhea can do the same. This makes up infectious pink eye. But children in most cases acquire non-infectious pink eye. This type of pink eye is caused by allergies (hay fever) and allergens (grass, pollen, animal dander and dust mites). Chemicals such as chlorine and soaps and environmental substances like smoke and fumes can also trigger pink eye. For people who wear contact lenses, GPC or Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis, another kind of pinkeye, can also occur. Symptoms of infectious pinkeye are red watery eyes with discharge and also soreness.
Symptoms
Pinkeye is caused by infections from bacteria or viruses, allergies, or certain irritants that come into contact with the eye. Because of all the different causes, there are several different types of conjunctivitis and different symptoms. Infection usually begins with one eye but can quickly spread to the other eye in cases of viral or bacterial conjunctivitis. Symptoms of pink eye may include:
Discomfort in the eye
Redness of the eye or inner eyelids
Discharge and teariness
Discharge may cause eyelids to crust and stick together while sleeping
Itchiness
Tenderness of the eye, or pain
Sensitivity to light
Swelling of the eyelids
Types
Everyone who has had conjunctivitis (also known as pinkeye) has most likely wondered if there is an effective home remedy for pink eye. After all, it's no fun waiting in line for the doctor and filling prescriptions when you have such an embarrassment on your face! With so many children in daycare or preschool, the general lack of cleanliness in our society, and the unhealthy lifestyle habits we live by, it's no wonder pink eye is spread so easily. This article will explore why pink eye is such a persistent problem, and what we can do to prevent ourselves and our children from catching it.
Conjunctivitis is especially common in children because illnesses spread so quickly in daycares and schools. However, it's not just a problem that children have to endure. Many adults catch it from their children or end up with pink eye in some way or another. It is quite an embarrassing and uncomfortable infection, so many people are interested in learning about avoiding the spread of infection, and even using a home remedy for pink eye.
Allergic conjunctivitis occurs more frequently among children with allergies such as hay fever. Allergic conjunctivitis often occurs in both eyes at the same time. Irritant conjunctivitis can be caused by such chemicals as chlorine or air pollutants such as smoke and fumes. A blocked tear duct can cause Conjunctivitis to occur in babies younger than 4 weeks old , which can be treated by gentle massage between the eye and nasal area.
