History Of Billiards Game
The game that we love playing today comes with a wonderful history that cannot be superseded. Its history is considered to be quite interesting and rich and tells players the events that led to the formulation of Billiards, the game that players all around the world enjoy playing the most. The word ‘Billiards' is considered a derivative of the word ‘Billart', a wooden stick and the word ‘Bille', a ball. The origins of the game can be traced back to the 15th Century in Europe where lawn games were played in France. The game moved indoors to a wooden table with green cloth that was used to resemble grass. The modern day pool table edges had simple borders back then. The balls that get hit through the cue today were shoved through wooden sticks better known as ‘maces'.
Shakespeare has mentioned about the game in Antony and Cleopatra where as many such epithets have been found in manuscripts that date back to the 1800s. The cue stick started being worked upon in the 1600s. The mace started becoming very inconvenient because of its large head and players would shove the balls through the handle. The need was for a very tender stick which would be easy to handle and also could be used to effortlessly strike the ball. The tables were very flat with thick wood and were used for keeping the balls on the surface and not allowing them to fall down. The tables had a huge resemblance to river banks and were labeled as ‘banks'. Pockets were not invented back then and players would tell their contemporaries to position the basket on the ground appropriately where the ball would fall.
The equipment for the game started to improve in England in the 1800s during the Industrial Revolution where work on improving the craft of the game started being developed big time. Chalk started getting used as a substance to reduce friction between the cue stick and the balls so that shots could be played properly. In England pool table is called English Pool Tables. Slowly and steadily, the two piece cue was developed. This happened in 1829 in the United States of America where the popularity of the game was slowly picking up. Vulcanization of rubber happened in 1839 and then subsequently in 1845, this technology was used to make the cushions on which the balls started falling into after getting potted. 1850 was the year when the game very similar to what it is today and started being played in this manner.
There are a lot of other connotations involved in the game that have to be described extensively. These major occurrences shaped the game the way it has become today and have made it into a huge sensation. With time, the look and feeling of the game have evolved but the essence remains the same and the way of play has also been retained. The game still remains as popular as ever and enjoys a huge fan following that is not only interested in playing it but also in knowing all the factors responsible behind its development.
