The Lifestyle and Record of Willie Mosconi: A Billiards Icon
No matter what part of the world you play billiards in one thing is common, no one can deny Willie Mosconi as one of the best to ever grace the game. Born in Philadelphia June 27 1913, Mosconi's father owned a small billiards parlor and some would defend that this was a sign that Mosconi was fated to play the game. Being the son of a parlor proprietor did not bring with it as much encouragement to take on the game as one might assume. Mosconi's father was authoritative and would lock up the cues at night in the hopes that his son would choose a contrasting path for his life. This strife did not sway Mosconi and his passion for the game and as a boy he would play with potatoes and broom sticks.
1931 marked Mosconi's professional entrance into the game. When Mosconi died at the age of 80 in 1993, his name had become to the sport what Babe Ruth had become to baseball. Highlights of his achievements include a high grand average of 18.34, a run of 526 straight balls made in match play, and in his most impressive game the legend sank 150 straight balls for a perfect game in one inning. Not only was Mosconi just about impossible to beat, but he played the game with an style that began to mold the sport into a respected sport in the public eye. Mosconi's slick dress style and razor sharp good looks gave him the admiration of women across the country and his skill the esteem of players globally.
One thing a great many people recall quite clearly about Mosconi's career is his rivalry with his nemesis, Minnesota Fats. Fats was an in your face blusterer style of player who got beneath your skin more frequently than not. Minnesota Fat's real name is Rudolf Wanderone and while constantly provoking and mocking Mosconi, would never accept challenges to face him in exhibition. Mosconi's deep seeded dislike for Minnesota Fats came from his opinion that Fats was giving the game a bad image, causing most that watched him to see the game as shifty and played in venues such as ill lit basements. This level of admiration for the sport was so apparent in Mosconi that he refused to refer to the game as pool and only as billiards.
Serving as the technical director for "The Hustler" in 1961 Mosconi made numerous undercover appearances. Starring Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason, the motion picture followed the story of pool players who sought out matches for monetary compensation. The feud between Mosconi and Minnesota Fats reached its boiling point when Fats bragged that the motion picture was actually a portrayal of his life. This new outburst from Minnesota Fats would prove to get under Mosconi's skin and lead to the comment that would at last bring the two to the same table. After publicly criticizing if Fats had ever been to Minnesota as his name would lead one to believe, Minnesota Fats finally accepted the request to compete against Mosconi. The duel was featured on ABC's "Wide World of Sports" in 1978 with both players competing at the age of 65. By their display of skill you would have never guessed the duo's age. Mosconi came away with an easy victory over Minnesota Fats while showcasing his accuracy and rapid fire play style that he was so well known for.
After his passing in 1993, Mosconi was survived by his wife, son, two daughters and multiple grandchildren. Even though many greats have played the game, no one has come close to touching the stature of Mosconi. There is one thing you can be absolutely sure of and that is the fact that as long as pool continues, so will the legacy of Willie Mosconi.
