Two Reasons Why Custom Cue Sticks Are Popular Among Billiards Players
To someone looking to win at billiards, having the best possible cue stick is a very high priority. Sure, all cue sticks have the same basic design, but the slight variations between them can become a huge factor in your success when you consider that the difference between a good shot and a bad shot is mere fractions of an inch. Although there are literally thousands of cues to choose from, more and more billiards players are opting for the custom cue route. This way, they can almost "create" the perfect cue for their individual preferences and desires.
Two Reasons Why Billiards Players Would Consider Getting A Custom Cue:
1. Players can't find a premade cue that "feels" right.. A standard cue stick is not simply a long, solid piece of wood. It is comprised of many parts including: the shaft, the grip, the tip, the butt cap, the bumper, a couple of collars and joints, and so forth. Each of these can be made of different materials, and each can slightly affect the weight and feel of the overall cue stick. For many players, it becomes almost impossible to purchase a premade cue because although he may like most of the cue, there may be one or two parts that just don't cut it. For example, the player may like one cue, but the grip feels "funny." Or may like another cue, but the shade of green on the forewrap just doesn't look right. To the average person, these minor nuances may not even be noticeable. But to the avid billiards (especially professionals who use the cue stick to earn money), these slight differences can be quite significant.
If a billiards player cannot find a cue stick, he or she will oftentimes get a custom cue made that suits them perfectly.
2. Players can be superstitious. Billiards players, like many other types of athletes, are often quite superstitious when it comes to their game playing, and this is especially true when it involves their cue sticks. If they have had any sort of success with a specific cue stick, they will look to copy that success by using the same type of cue. It might be the material of wood used, or a certain color, or even the type of grip. Although the billiards player may know logically that these factors matter much less than their actual skill level and performance, subconsciously they made the superstitious connection. Now if the player happens to break their cue during a game or have their prized cue lost or stolen, he will want to replace that cue to one that is identical to it. If the company that initially produced the cue has discontinued the model, the player may go for the custom cue option in order to find one that most resembles the look and feel of the pool cue that he has placed so much value in.
For most billiards players, finding a high quality cue that they feel good about isn't a difficult task. There are dozens of quality and reputable companies like Lucasi, McDermott, Pechauer, and Joss that offer a large selection of top notch cue sticks to choose from. But for those picky or superstitious billiards players who just can't seem to find the perfect cue, having a custom cue made is an option they are happy to take.
