Official pool cue review?
What do you feel is the best brand of pool cue? McDermott,Balabushka,Diveny,Schuler? If you could have any cue what kind would you get? Is there any cue you would never buy why?
Schuler is really head and shoulders above the others you listed, there really is no comparison. There are about a million brands out there though, so those are not even the tip of the iceberg.
McDermott is a nice cue if you're on a limited budget and want something that is a step up from the under-$100 junk cues out there. I don't recommend then for anyone who has $300-400 to spend though.
Someone bought the name Balabushka, they have no affiliation with the originals. And in reality, you probably really wouldn't want an original Balabushka as a playing cue. He's famous because he was one of the first to make high quality cues, but a new custom cue with modern cuemaking methods would probably play better. I've known people who've had original Balabushka's, and they usually have warped shafts (if they are even original) and are falling apart. Balabushka's are for collecting, not playing.
I really hate the attitude from some people that you can play well with anything. Well, of course you can learn to play well with anything, but if you buy junk, you're just making it hard on yourself. You can play a good game of golf with a set of hickory shafted clubs from the 1920s, but that doesn't mean you're not going to play a whole lot better if you learn with a set that are of the highest quality and latest technology.
Anyway, if you want a traditional playing cue, a custom cue is the way to go. I have a cue made by a guy named Jack Madden, and it is amazing. Southwest is the most famous name in custom cues, but I can promise you that there are probably 100 custom cuemakers out there than make a cue of similar or the same quality for a fraction of the price. Check your area for custom cuemakers if this is something you are interested in, chances are you can go in and try what they have, and have something build to be exactly what you want.
If you want high tech, Predator is at the leading edge, specifically the Predator P3. Every piece of it from top to bottom is built for accuracy, feel, and playability. I can guarantee you that no cue in any price range will be more accurate or play better than the P3. No off the rack cues, no custom cues, no nothing. The only people that don't like Predator are the ones who've used something else their entire lives and are opposed to learning to aim without having to adjust to cue ball deflection. My current playing cue is a P3 and I don't think I'll ever going back to a "traditional" cue as long as I have the option. If you don't want to spend $750 on a P3, Predator shafts are the best low deflection shaft on the market, and will provide most of the playing characteristics of the P3 to just about any cue.
Anyway, what a player ultimately ends up with should be determined by what they are looking to get out of their cue, and what they're willing to spend. But do NOT assume any old cue will play the same, and that it doesn't matter what you use. If you want to play your very best game, you must find the right cue for you.
