Why Maple woods for Pool cues while Ash woods for Snooker cues?
I just find out that Maple is common or maybe the only wood use for Pool cues while Ash wood are use only for Snooker cues..I just wondering why.? I hope to get very good answers.. please don't write and say read from this article..ok?? I also want some answer from cue makers too.
This came up in a forum one time and a cuemaker answered that it is mostly just because of availability. Pool is more of an American sport where maple is a much more readily available type of wood, and snooker is more of a British/European sport where ash is more readily available. That's why these types of woods were used many years ago, at this point it's just as much about tradition. There is also an argument that ash is a bit harder wood, which is better for snooker cues which typically have slimmer diameters than pool cues and snooker players tend to use less english (side spin) that pool players. The softer, more flexible maple shafts are a little better when using english.
