Film music: ET
Music is one of the essential elements of a film. When used correctly, music will enhance the movie by setting the mood and tone of the scenes and by enhancing the feeling of the characters . A perfect example of a movie where the music almost becomes a filter through which we see the film is E.T(1982). In this movie the use of a variety of different instruments truly help the illusion of the film come to life.
First of all, the music gives the movie an emotional stance. John Williams uses it to create or enhance a feeling that would not otherwise be present in a scene or would not be sufficient without it. It can change the audience's emotions either to make the audience happy, sad, angry, scared, or possibly excited. For instance, in cue seven when Elliot and E.T become friends, music is played sweetly in a major key in the background to give the scene emotional focus and that way telling us to feel happy and excited for the characters. It really helps to establish the mood. This theme is a reoccurring theme which is played every time one of Elliot's family members discovers E.T.
The background music can also help heighten a suspenseful moment in the film and create more tension and suspense. In cue nine when the "bad guys" are searching for E.T the atmosphere becomes tense and disturbing and the music becomes dark and weighty. Williams uses the bass woodwinds to very effectively represent evil. He purposely does this so that we know to anticipate something bad is going to happen. It builds a lot of suspense and enhances the drama which keeps you at the edge of your seat while watching the scene. This theme is also a reoccuring theme that comes back whenever the "bad guys" are on the screen.
Cue twenty-four is the bicycle chase cue where Elliot's older brother is looking for E.T. The music that accompanies the scene is very fast, exciting and has a lot of sync points. You can really see the correspondence of sound and image in this scene. This is very effective because the background music specifically accompanies the action which almost makes you feel like you are the one on the bicycle which is a great cinematic experience.
In the scene where Elliot and E.T are in the hospital and it seems like E.T is dying, the background music, which is cue twenty-nine, is rather mysterious and a part of the main theme is played on the violin. I very much liked the fact that Williams used a mysteriously sounding tune rather than a sad one because he leaves the audience to decide whether they want to feel sad or not. Often, film scores underline what we're supposed to feel, or plainly explain us what we should feel and do not leave it up to us to decide which can sometimes overkill the scene.
film music establishes the mood of the scene and enhances the drama in many ways. Music can reach an audience emotionally beyond the ability of picture and sound and therefore is an essential part of a movie.
