Snooker cue problem!?
I have an 11 year old custom snooker cue which has recently aquired a green tinge on the american ash shaft. I have been told that one cause for this problem is due to the contact between the cue and the foam lining of the aluminium case that i store the cue in. Is this a legitimate reason for this defect or is it likely to been something else. If so, is it possible to restore the cue?

the green tinge is normal.
there are a number of reasons for this, however, im not convinced your case is the problem.
the chalk you use on the tip gets everywhere. -it can be very dusty, like flour. this dust gets onto your hands and then tranfers to the cue as you feather and take your shot.
also, the sweat and oils from your hands and chin will get onto the cue and after time, the oils will rot, and turn green.
neither of these will affect the cues performance.
If it has been a long time, and the green has penetrated the cue quite a way, you might not be able to clean it off.
if it has just started to turn green, u might want to try lightly sanding it, with the grain. dont take too much off, just enough to get into the grain and loosen the green dirt. then using a damp cloth, give it a vigorous clean, and dry straight away. repeat this until the green has gone or has faded. then, get some linseed oil on a cloth and lightly coat the cue in it. leave for 10 mins, and buff the cue using a clean dry cloth to a shine. (buffing after using linseed oil can be hard work, as it dries hard.) this should prevent the green coming back.
a light sanding and oiling should be done every 6months - 1year. just dont sand too hard or you will sand your cue away.
p.s. linseed oil is best, as it will soak into the cue, then dry hard, preventing dirt getting back in. if you have trouble finding linseed oil, simply use ANY natural oil, eg, vegetable oil, as it will do the same job, but wont dry hard. and you will need to re-apply monthly as it will soak back out again.
