Did Allison Fisher really use a cheap $140 pool stick to win all those championships?
Allison Fisher is probably the best women's pool player ever. It says on her website that she used a stock SST pool shaft for 13 years and a stock Cuetec pool cue (modified only 2 inches), but no other modifications.
Do you believe this?

Literally hundreds of people have said they've seen her playing with a wooden shaft in tournaments. She is paid to play with an SST shaft, of course she's going to say that's what she uses no matter what. I don't really care what she uses, but I would take what she says with a grain of salt and form your own opinion if it's important to you.
Most professional players do NOT use completely off-the-rack, stock cues, especially if they have sponsors. They may make minor changes like just the tip, or the ferrule. They may sand down the shaft or have it turned down on a lathe. Or they may have a custom shaft built (like it is rumored Fisher has done) or a completely custom cue and have their sponsor put a logo on it. The only exceptions to this rule are the newer, high-tech cues like Predator. Altering some of these cues can hinder the integrity of the shaft.
The whole "the cue doesn't matter" line is a complete crock. Of course a great player can play a great game with a cheap cue. But that doesn't mean they'll be playing their BEST game, which is what they want in tournaments. The cost of the cue isn't always what matters, it's more about having a cue that's consistent and that you are familiar and comfortable with. Many players spend years tweaking their cues to their tastes, then when it's time for a replacement, they HAVE to customize whatever new cues they get to replicate the feel and playability of their old cues.
The whole "broomstick argument" is one of the misinformed. That's in reference to an old hustle great players would use to fleece the unwitting. The rule of the hustle is to play just well enough to beat your opponent and take all his money, not to put your best game on the table. Ask any hustler if they'd take that trick to the US Open and they'd laugh at you.
