Does the cue butt matter?

I currently have a mid-priced McDermott cue... around 300 bucks and it came with a G-Core shaft... I'm looking to upgrade the shaft to either an OB1, Predator 314 or Meucci black dot... my question is... could I just buy the shaft itself? Or does the butt matter that much that I have to buy the shaft with the butt?

Well, the shaft is the most significant factor in how the cue will play, but the butt affects balance, feel, and the overall hit of the cue. There's nothing wrong with putting an aftermarket shaft on your cue, but I suggest you work with a place like Seyberts that will fit a blank shaft specifically to your cue rather than buying one off the rack. It will cost a little more, but you'll get the best possible fit and the most solid hit you could obtain with any particular shaft. I also advise against Meucci shafts, that are crap compared to the Predator and OB1 you listed.
