Things to Consider Before you Buy that Pool Stick
Pool Cue Stick Taper
The taper of a pool cue stick describes how the shaft gets smaller and smaller as it comes towards the leather tip. The two types of tapers that most people are familiar with are the "pro taper" and the "european taper." A cue stick with a European taper gets continually smaller as it gets towards the tip of the stick. Whereas a pro taper shaft has the same diameter for part of the cue, but then starts to actually taper roughly a foot or so from the tip.
If you are an average home player who wants to use their home billiards player for playing some nine ball and eight ball, your smartest choice is going to be a stick with a pro taper that is 14 inches.
Pool Cue Stick Ferrule
The ferrule is the white part of the cue shaft that supports the leather tip. It can be very important because it helps in the transfer of power to the tip and protects your shaft from damage. On cheaper models, the billiard cue ferrule is made of a thin or even hollow plastic. Ideally, you want to make sure you get one with a very high impact hard plastic material. On some older or antique pool cues, you might even see some constructed with an ivory ferrule.
Pool Cue Stick Weight
How heavy a billiard cue stick weighs can have a lot of influence on how it plays. The range of a pool cue stick can dip down to 17 ounces and go as high as 21 ounces. While the weightier cues are generally known for offering stiffer hits, every player has their own personal taste. If you are after a cue that should assist you whether you are looking for a power shot or a careful finesse shot, stick to one that is either 19 or 20 ounces in weight.
Pool Cue Stick Wrap
The Billiards Cue Wrap is what you grip when you go to make your shot. You will see four varieties of wrap: Irish linen, nylon, leather, and cue sticks with no wrap. Irish linen is certainly the most common and most popular, both because of how nice it looks and how easy it is to grip. Another good choice is nylon. Though it is typically only seen on cheaper cues, it still has a nice playability.
Pool Cue Stick Design
Make certain that you choose a pool cue that you genuinely like to look at. In design, there are two main features to look out for: the stain and the inlays. Do you want a dark or light wood stain? Or would you prefer a color that really stands out as opposed to a stain that imitates the color of natural wood? The inlays also add a level of personalization and flair.
