What ounce cue do you break with?
I been breaking with a 25 oz cue for over a year because I used to think all you needed was power on the break. Now I regret getting the cue and am thinking about getting a jump/break cue in the 18-19oz range so I can control the break better
Most people tend to go lighter than their playing cue. Very light cues can be good, but aren't necessarily the best for a specific person.
The speed at which the cue ball hits the rack is a function of how much power is delivered to it. Power is a function of the speed at which the cue is moving and the weight of the cue. Some people can produce more power by using a very light cue and producing a lot of speed, others produce more power with a very heavy cue and less speed.
As far as power with control, that is probably a bit easier to do with the very heavy cue you are using. Less speed is required to create power, and the momentum of the cue and it's extra weight will more easily keep it on line. That's not to say you would not be better with a lighter cue, just don't assume a light cue is going to be more controllable.
Anyway, I suggest a little trial and error. Go to a pool hall and pull the lightest cue off the rack and see what kind of breaks you can do with it. Work your way through the different weights and try to find one that you think suits you best. And there are some brands of cues with removable and changeable weight screws. It would not be a bad idea to find one like that if you want to tinker with the weight.
