It's not easy to find the right treadmill for home use, there are lots of models and makes with lots of specs and features, and treadmills can be expensive. Don't get bogged down looking at all the available features -- speakers, fans and TV's don't help treadmill performance and are usually low quality and break easily. Find the highest quality machine that you can afford that meets or exceeds these minimum specs and doesn't have a lot of extras and you won't go too wrong. Also make sure to check on-line for the manufacturers reviews, if something does go wrong it's good to know that they'll be there to help you out.

- Motor Horse Power – 2 HP or bigger. The bigger the motor is the cooler it will run and the longer it will last. The numbers can be deceiving, look at the motor warranty to help understand how willing the manufacturer is to back their motor.
- Max Speed - 10 mph is equal to a 6 minute mile and 12 mph is 5 minute mile. For most people 10 mph is fast enough but for serious training look for a max speed of 12 mph.
- Belt Size – 18" x 50" is big enough but if one of the users is over 6' tall then step up to a longer and wider belt.
- Belt Construction - Most treadmill belts are 2-ply, the top running surface should be textured polyurethane and the underside should be a low-friction nylon-polyester weave.
- Deck - the board under the belt is known as the treadmill deck its one of the most important parts of a treadmill. A phenolic resin coated deck is best and it should be mounted to the frame with shock absorbing rubber grommets.
- Cushioning – Decks cushioning is typically in the form of elastomer (rubber) bushings called grommets that isolate the deck from the frame. Other innovative designs use decks that offer more flex, suspended frames on a pivot or provide hydraulic shocks. We've found that a lot of these gimmicks don't work as advertised or aren't worth the extra cost or maintenance headaches.
- Price – The bottom line is that good quality treadmills start around $1,000, manufacturers work hard to hold the cost of their entry level machines to this price point. If you plan on doing some real running, or weigh 250 pounds or more you should spend at least $1,400 and for serous running and distance training increase your budget to at least $1,600.
- Warranty - Treadmill warranties are a good indication of how much a manufacturer is willing to back their product. A 25 year warranty for the frame/motor, a two-year warranty on parts and one-year in-home service is an absolute minimum.
