Could someone please help me with this math problem?
Well since most of you can do much better math than I can (I'm only in grade 10 afterall), I was wondering if someone could help me how to solve these questions..
We're doing decomposing factors right now with algebric values. Questions like these have been giving me trouble:
2x² - 7x - 4
3x² - x -4
4x + 6x² - 10
We're supposed to be finding the factors of these, so like (x + ___)(x - __) for example. I've tried the method of finding the factors of the numeric value (-4, -4 and -10 in this case) and seeing which ones add to make the x value (-7x, -x, 4x), but that hasn't worked for me really. There should be another method by method of decomposition, but I don't understand it...
Someone please mind explaining and writing out the solution to at least one of the above questions Step-By-Step? THANK YOU!
The reason your method isn't working is because of the number in front of the x^2,
One method to get around this uses trial and error.
For the first problem, you know it has to start like (2x____)(x_____)
and there will be a + in one and a - in the other. The final factors must be 2 and 2 or 1 and 4.
This leaves you with a few choices to check out.
(2x +2 )(x-2 )
(2x-2 )(x +2)
(2x+4 )(x-1)
(2x-4 )(x+1)
(2x +1)(x-4 )
(2x-1)(x+4)
The second fron the end (2x +1)(x-4 ) is the one that works
