Bleach instead of shock in my vinyl inground pool?
I have heard that bleach and liquid shock are the same thing, and that you can just use bleach in place of liquid shock in your pool. I have an inground pool with a vinyl liner in it- is it OK to use bleach instead? Do you use it at the same ratio as the liquid shock, and does it dissipate at the same rate? I am asking because I can liquid shock seems to run somewhere between $2.50 (on sale) and $3.00 per gallon bottle- I can get bleach for $1.50 to $2.00 a bottle, so I could save a little money if this is true. Thanks
the biggest difference between the bleach and shock are the concentrations.
Clorox bleach runs approximately 3.64% hypochlorite.
That's the active ingredient that "shocks" the pool.
liquid shock tretments usually run 3to5times as concentrated, while the granular shock is often 45% to 70% concentrate.(the best economical shock)
dissipation rates for WEAKER solutions like bleach will be far quicker than that of granules or stronger shock solutions.
If using the whole bottle of shock treatment is the route you usually take, then bleach will NOT be cheaper... just less effective and more liquid to be dumped in.
I'm ;usually using granular shock mixed in a bucket separately when I don't use the entire package. That way, it's more easily dissipated, since it enters the pool in liquid form.
I had all the same questions myself.
=)
