Side vent chimney for gas fired furnace?
Hello,
I am installing a 45000 btu overhead furnace ino my garage.
The unit can be vented horizontally or vertically.
I chose to vent it out the side of my garage.
The furnace requires a 4" vent, so I bought a complete vent 'kit' from a local store.
The kit consists of a 90' degree elbow, 2 x 4ft lengths of straight single wall vent, and 1 four ft. lenght of 'b-wall'
It also has a 2 piece collar for where the vent passes through the wall. A 'storm cap' and the end cap...but the kit does not contain instructions.
I am mechanically inclined, I have an automotive license, and a heavy duty ticket...but that (of course) does not qualify me for this job.
I am looking for advise, instuctions, and tips from a pro before I cut a hole in my garage.
My garage is 2x4 construction. fiberglass insulation, and vinyl siding on the outside.
I will be happy to supply photos of this project, and the parts if you like.
Thank you.
Work from the inside out to make sure you exit the house in between studs When the duct is all connected and you're ready to cut the outside use the duct as a template and make a circle on the inside of the sheathing, put a screw through the wall in the center of the circle, from the inside out. This will show you exactly where your going to make the hole outside. Draw the proper diameter circle on the siding and cut the siding with a utility knife first, this will prevent chipping, then cut the sheathing with sawz-all or jigsaw. Make sure you use high heat caulking against the siding and all the duct joints. If it wasn't provided with the kit check with the people you bought it from, don't want the fumes (CO2) leaking in the garage, might go BOOM. Hope I was some help.
