No. 1 Chesterfield Square by Nick Jones. Brilliant Read
This is a truly delightful read that captures your interest from the first pages of the prologue and holds it for all 400 glorious pages, until the end which leaves you wanting more.
Spanning the first twenty five years of the Twentieth Century, this brilliantly researched tale of one man's life as he struggles to break free from the servitude into which he was born, is quite remarkable for a debut writer. Superbly descriptive writing transports you from the world of privilege to poverty and back again amidst the beauty of the Devon countryside, the thrill and glitter of Edwardian London and the horrors of the First World War battlefields in Belgium.
The cleverly cast plot is woven around real life events, principally the Titanic disaster, the Suffragette movement and World War One - and is completely believable. In fact you feel as if you are living the characters' lives with them in a way that is utterly absorbing. Difficult to put down.
It is a story of enduring love - be prepared for tears, so moving is the writing in places - individual triumphs that are appropriately satisfying and acute sadness - cue the tears - but always uplifting, never depressing. I easily grew to love Max Chambers and Rosie, his beautiful bride, and feel great sympathy for Countess Gordon. The characters are developed into real people with a deftness and credibility that is impressive.
A really great read in the best traditions of the genre with a sequel on the way. Good! I want to know what happens next.
Move over saga writers everywhere, No. 1 Chesterfield Square has arrived!
