If I struck a ball on a frictionless pool table (without any holes), will it eventually loop?
If I struck a cue ball with a cue (randomly), will the ball eventually reach the original position with the same original velocity (which includes the direction) after it was struck? In other words, will the path of the cue ball eventually loop?
Adding on to the original question, does your original answer still stand if you introduce more balls to the system? Does the shape of the table matter (circular, elliptical, etc.)? The initial position of the ball?
Of course, assume all collisions are elastic, no energy is lost, magnitude of momentum is conserved, and the tables are frictionless.
Yes, the ball going back to the original state is called a Poincaré Recurrence.
It has been proven that if you take a random walk in two dimensions, you will always return to a arbitrarily close distance away from your starting point. This isn't true for three or more dimensions, though.
