Essentials of a Billiards Table
Billiards is a popular game in most of the western countries. It is now catching up in the other countries too. A billiards table is a bounded table on which cue sports are played. It is actually a rectangular shaped table and nowadays, all billiards tables provide a flat surface normally in green or blue color base. Normally made of quarried slate it is covered with a cloth and surrounded by vulcanized rubber cushions. The whole table is elevated above the floor and there are holes at the end of each rectangular table corner.
Many cue games are played on a billiards table. In the modern age, it is often referred to as the pool table or the snooker table. Different names of the table based on the sport that is played on it are: pool tables, pocket billiards table, British standard pool tables, snooker tables, etc. Other types of billiard tables which are used for specific games like the Russian pyramid, Asian four balls, and bumper pool, etc. are available in the market too. Incidentally, the British pool tables differ very much from the pool tables found in the United States of America. There are also new-age novelty billiard tables that come in a variety of shapes and sizes like zigzag, circular, and even hexagonal formats.
There are even pocket less carom billiards tables available in the market. These are used for games such as the three-cushion billiards, straight rail, balkline, artistic billiards and cushion carom games. Pool tables on the other hand are sometimes called pocket billiards tables. They are specifically used to play various pool games such as eight-ball, nine-ball, straight pool and one-pocket case games. Pocket billiard tables have pockets, usually six of them. One pocket each is located at the corner of the table and one at the midpoint of each of the longer rectangular sides. A British standard pool table has a cue ball and a red or yellow ball close to the pockets. In the United Kingdom and many other countries, the standard pool table dimension is a little different from the American Pool table dimension. A standard billiard table designed for a snooker game is generally called a snooker table.
Normally a billiard table comes with a whole list of accessories. You can find a lot of places which offer standard billiards table at a cheap price. But before buying one, you must make sure that the wood used in making the table is of standard quality, the vulcanized rubber used in making the cushions and pockets are well graded and the velvet used on the bed of the table is of extra fine quality.
