Tools and Materials Most Used For DIY Remodeling
When ever you start any remodeling project, there are basic steps you should begin with. You also need to know what tools and materials your remodel job requires before you start.
Doing these steps ahead of time will make the job go smoother and also gives you a very good estimate on what this project will cost you.
Below is a complete list of materials, tools needed along with information that is important for any size-remodeling project
Start With a Plan
Draw up a plan to scale on graph paper. You should do it in a large scale like a 1 inch, which equals a 1 foot. Doing it, this way will make it much easier for you to read.
Once you have your plan then you are able to compile a list of tools and materials needed for the remodel job. Now you have the means to begin comparing prices from different suppliers to get an idea of the cost for your remodel project.
Necessary Permits
Always check with your local building inspectors before starting a remodeling project on a home. When you are changing your homes structure in any way most towns and communities will require a building permit.
In addition, any alterations to plumbing and heating or electrical will require separate permits. Make available a copy of your plans with a list of materials to the inspectors, so you have the proper requirements for the building code in your area.
Tools and Materials Most Used
Using 2-inch masking tape, make a template on the floor to show door and wall locations. A life size layout is crucial in visualizing what the result should look like.
Common Materials
Lumber: ¼-round shoe molding, baseboard molding, 1x2 furring strips, 2x2,2x4,2x6 framing lumber. Also wood shims, window and door case molding.
Plywood/Sheet Goods: ½-inch wallboard (4x8 & 4x12-foot sheets). 3/8-inch wallboard, sheathing grade plywood, finishes plywood (½"-¾" thick) fiberglass roll insulation. For wet areas, use a water-resistant wallboard.
Fasteners: wallboard screws (1 ½-2 ½-3 inch), lag screws, masonry anchors metal connectors. For finish nails (4d, 6d, 8d), common nails (6d, 8d, l6d), concrete nails.
Adhesives: constructions adhesive, panel adhesive, hot glue sticks, and carpenters glue.
Miscellaneous: plumbing, lighting and electrical fixtures. Paint, wall covering, prehung interior doors and windows, lockset, stepladders and sawhorses.
Hand Tools: Screwdrivers both standard and phillips head, l6-ounce curved claw hammer, wallboard hammer, pry bar, wallboard square, carpenters level, T-bevel, clamps, tape measure, plumb bob/chalk like, electronic stud finder, carpenters crayon, utility knife and blades, crosscut saw, backsaw and miter box, hacksaw, coping saw, block plane, wallboard knives caulk gun.
Power Tools: circular saw and blades, jig saw and blades, router and cutting bits, variable speed drill and bits, screw gun or cordless screwdriver, electric sander and sandpaper, extension cords.
